Quiet Please

Ecclesiastes 9:17: The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

Will Rogers said that we should never miss a good opportunity to shut up.

Romans 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

Our spirits do not have ears but they are the part of us that hears from God. Noise in our ears often prevents us from hearing the voice of God in our spirits. Sometimes I prefer to have the doors open when we hold services in nursing homes. With the doors open others can hear the music or the Bible preaching and come in. I consider it good advertising. But sometimes the noise from outside is so loud that we must close the doors. When I visit the patients in their rooms one barometer of their spirituality is whether or not the TV is loud or not. With a few exceptions I believe that those who want to hear from God turn the TV down or off and those that do not want to hear from Him keep the TV on. There are many in our society that consider a moment of silence torture. They prefer the noise of the world instead of the voice of God. If the noise of the world is unavailable they often seem to talk incessantly to drown out His voice. If you dislike quietness I fear for your soul. I doubt that you know the Lord very well if at all.

John 10:27: My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

Psalms 46:10: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

1 Kings 19:12: And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Psalms 23:2: He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

1 Timothy 2:1-3: I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

I would suggest that since Paul exhorts us to pray for quiet lives, quiet lives are a good thing.

1 Thessalonians 4:11: And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

Do you study to be quiet?

1 Peter 3:1-4: Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Psalms 107:30: Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

Isaiah 32:18: And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;
